PC/PBT alloy is a thermoplastic blend combining polycarbonate (PC) and polybutylene terephthalate (PBT). This material is designed to balance the toughness of PC with the chemical resistance and dimensional stability of PBT. It is widely used in automotive, electronics, and industrial applications where impact strength and weather resistance are critical.
One of the main reasons manufacturers choose PC/PBT alloy is its excellent impact resistance, particularly at low temperatures. Unlike pure PBT, which can become brittle in cold environments, PC/PBT maintains its toughness down to -30°C. This makes it suitable for outdoor equipment, automotive exterior parts, and structural components exposed to vibration and shock.
Heat resistance is another key advantage. PC/PBT alloys typically withstand continuous temperatures up to 120°C, with some grades offering higher heat deflection temperatures. This allows the material to perform reliably in demanding thermal environments, including under-hood automotive applications and industrial machinery.
Chemical resistance is also notable. PBT contributes good resistance to oils, fuels, and solvents, while PC provides toughness and UV stability. This combination makes PC/PBT suitable for applications exposed to automotive fluids, cleaning agents, and outdoor weathering. However, it is not recommended for prolonged exposure to strong alkalis or certain solvents.
Weather resistance is a key feature of UV-stabilized PC/PBT grades. These formulations resist yellowing and degradation under prolonged sunlight exposure, making them suitable for outdoor applications such as garden equipment, automotive trim, and building components.
PC/PBT is commonly used in automotive parts (bumpers, door handles, mirror housings), electrical equipment (connectors, switch housings), and industrial components (pump parts, power tool housings). Its ability to be injection molded into complex shapes allows for high-volume production with consistent quality.
From a manufacturing perspective, PC/PBT can be customized with UV stabilizers, flame retardants (UL 94 V-0), and impact modifiers to meet specific requirements. Different grades are available for different applications, and customers should confirm the exact properties needed. For outdoor applications, UV-stabilized grades are essential. For fire safety, V-0 rated grades should be specified.
Quality control is important for PC/PBT parts. Consistent melt flow, uniform color, and stable mechanical properties are critical for reliable performance. Reputable manufacturers test PC/PBT for impact strength, heat deflection temperature, and UV stability. Customers should confirm the specific grade and verify performance through practical testing before selection.
