IATF 16949 Standard
IATF 16949 is a quality management system standard specifically designed for the automotive industry. Its primary purpose is to help organizations within the automotive supply chain establish management processes focused on defect prevention, the reduction of variation and waste, and continuous improvement. It is not a standalone standard; it must be used in conjunction with ISO 9001:2015, serving as a set of automotive-specific supplementary requirements built upon the general requirements of ISO 9001.
Scope and Certification Value
The standard applies to all organizations in the automotive supply chain involved in the manufacturing of production or service parts. For most original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), IATF 16949 certification is a prerequisite for entering into supply contracts. Certified organizations are listed in a global IATF database, which OEMs use for verification purposes.
Core Framework
Building upon the ISO 9001 framework, the standard incorporates specific requirements for the automotive industry. Key aspects include:
Product Safety: Requires the establishment of dedicated processes to manage product safety, covering both the products themselves and the associated manufacturing processes.
Corporate Responsibility: Top management is required to define policies on corporate responsibility, including anti-bribery measures, codes of conduct for employees, and procedures for ethical reporting (whistleblowing).
Embedded Software: For products containing embedded software, the standard mandates the establishment of a software quality assurance system.
Supplier Management: Strengthens requirements for supplier selection, second-party audits, and quality assurance for embedded software provided by suppliers.
Manufacturing Process Audits: Requires the adoption of a process-based approach, ensuring that all quality management system processes are audited within a three-year cycle, with audit frequency determined based on risk and performance.
