FKM vs. FFKM: A Comprehensive Comparison

In short, FFKM can be considered the "ultimate upgraded version" of FKM. It pushes the limits of rubber materials in terms of both heat resistance and chemical resistance, but this comes at a significantly higher cost.

Here is a detailed comparison across key dimensions:

Aspect FKM (Fluorocarbon Rubber) FFKM (Perfluoroelastomer)
Molecular Structure Primarily carbon-fluorine bonds, but still contains hydrogen atoms in the polymer chain. Almost all hydrogen atoms are replaced by fluorine atoms, forming a highly stable perfluorinated structure.
Continuous Service Temperature Approx. 204°C (400°F). Some special grades can withstand higher temperatures. Approx. 316°C to 325°C (600–617°F).
Chemical Resistance Excellent for most applications. Good resistance to fuels, lubricating oils, hydraulic fluids, and many industrial chemicals. Not resistant to ketones, esters, strong amines, hot water/steam, etc. Near-universal. Resists almost all chemicals, including strong acids, strong oxidizers, organic/inorganic solvents, and plasma environments.
Plasma Resistance Limited. Suffers significant mass loss and surface degradation in plasma environments; performance is approaching its limits. Outstanding. Specifically designed for plasma environments; performance degradation is far less than FKM under identical conditions, offering longer maintenance cycles and equipment life.
Long-Term Thermal Aging Life At 200°C in air, the estimated service life for an O-ring is about 75 days. Under the same 200°C conditions, the service life reaches about 135 days - nearly twice that of FKM.
Typical Applications Automotive, aerospace, oil & gas, general industrial equipment, etc. Semiconductor manufacturing (etching, CVD, etc.), chemical processing, pharmaceuticals, and other fields with extreme requirements for corrosion resistance and high-temperature stability.
Relative Cost Moderate - a cost-effective, high-performance sealing choice. Extremely expensive - a top-tier sealing material with a very high initial investment cost.

How to Choose?

Your choice depends entirely on your specific operating environment:

Choose FKM if:

Your application involves conventional high temperatures (below 200°C).

The media are primarily fuels, lubricating oils, or mild acids/bases.

Cost is a significant factor - FKM provides a proven, reliable, and economical solution.

Choose FFKM if:

Your equipment operates at temperatures exceeding 250°C.

It comes into contact with highly corrosive chemicals (such as BOE, HF, SPM, or plasma environments).

Seal failure would cause significant downtime, safety hazards, or enormous financial loss.

Although the initial investment is much higher, FFKM can deliver a lower total cost of ownership (TCO) through longer service life and reduced maintenance downtime.
