In recent years, Cambodia's tire manufacturing industry has emerged as the country's largest source of foreign direct investment, replacing infrastructure, energy, and garment industries. In this process, Chinese tire manufacturers play a pivotal role. At present, Cambodia has successfully attracted five Chinese tire manufacturers to set up production bases, namely Sailun Tire, GM Tire, Doublestar Tire, Wanli Tire, and Zhengdao Tire. It is reported that on April 8, 2024, the groundbreaking ceremony of the Fumax Tire Cambodia Production Base was held in the Special Economic Zone of Kratie Province, Cambodia.
The commissioning of these Chinese tire factories has not only brought huge investment to Cambodia, but also promoted the development of the local rubber processing industry. The Cambodian government estimates that once all these tire factories are put into production, 200,000 to 300,000 tons of latex will be needed each year as the main raw material for manufacturing tires. This is undoubtedly a big benefit for Cambodia, which has rich rubber resources. The total area of Cambodia's rubber plantations is 404,000 hectares, of which 80% are ready for harvest. Driven by the tire manufacturing industry, the value of Cambodia's exported rubber products (including tires) has increased significantly. Last year, Cambodia exported a total of US$772.5 million worth of automobile tires, a year-on-year increase of 135%. However, Cambodia's rubber processing capacity is limited, resulting in tire factories in Cambodia still relying on imports of most rubber raw materials from foreign countries. Despite this, the development prospects of Cambodia's tire manufacturing industry remain promising. By setting up factories in Cambodia, Chinese tire manufacturers can not only avoid US tariffs and improve the competitiveness of their products in the international market, but also obtain cost-effective raw materials locally, reducing transportation costs and supply chain complexity. Looking ahead, as the Cambodian government continues to optimize the investment environment and attract more international investment, Cambodia's tire manufacturing industry is expected to become an important engine to promote the country's economic growth. The investment layout of Chinese tire manufacturers in Cambodia will also bring new vitality to the global tire market.
