Market Prices & Trading Dynamics

Futures Performance

China's main rubber futures contract (RU2605) traded in a tight range around 15,700 yuan/ton on December 29, caught in a short-term "box" consolidation between 15,600–15,800 yuan/ton as investors awaited a directional breakout. Meanwhile, Japan's rubber futures retreated from a one-month high, pressured by rising Chinese inventories, reflecting cautious sentiment amid balanced supply–demand signals. Synthetic rubber futures saw stronger momentum, with the main contract up over 2% intraday, fueled by surging upstream butadiene prices-driven by domestic plant maintenance and firm overseas markets-though demand weakness capped further gains.

Spot Market Quotations

Product Origin Price (Yuan/ton)
Natural Latex (Barrel) Thailand 12,800–12,900
Natural Latex (Bulk) Thailand 11,500–11,600
Natural Latex (Bulk) Vietnam 10,900
Natural Latex China 11,300
Polybutadiene Rubber North/East China 11,400 (delivered)

Spot natural latex prices remained stable but faced poor transaction activity, as downstream product makers resisted high prices amid muted demand, limiting the spot market's ability to track futures gains.

Supply & Demand Fundamentals

Global Production & Trade

The Association of Natural Rubber Producing Countries (ANRPC) reported that global natural rubber output fell 2.6% month-on-month to 14.74 million tons in November 2025, while consumption dropped 1.4% to 12.48 million tons, underscoring a mild supply–demand imbalance. For China, imports of natural and synthetic rubber (including latex) reached 7.572 million tons in January–November 2025, up 16.5% year-on-year, as manufacturers stocked up amid favorable price windows. In contrast, China's reclaimed rubber imports slid 8.76% year-on-year to 171,599 tons in the first 11 months, while exports soared 22.96% to 96,848 tons, with November exports jumping 39.70% year-on-year to 10,579 tons-indicating strong global demand for cost-effective recycled alternatives.

Downstream Tire Sector

Tire manufacturing activity showed mixed trends this week. China's passenger car tire (PCR) operating rate edged up 0.66 percentage points week-on-week to 72.05% but remained 7.11 percentage points lower than a year ago; truck and bus tire (TBR) rates fell 2.19 percentage points to 61.95%, roughly flat year-on-year. Factories focused on on-demand purchasing, with limited willingness to build raw material stocks amid uncertain end-market demand, particularly as the year-end automotive market awaits new policy signals.

Sustainability & Industry Innovations

EUDR Implementation Looms

The EU Due Diligence Regulation (EUDR) for natural rubber takes effect for large and medium-sized enterprises on December 30, 2025-just one day from now-with micro and small businesses granted an extra year until December 30, 2026. "EUDR-compliant rubber" commands a premium of $100–150/ton due to traceability and deforestation-free sourcing requirements, prompting European tire makers to adjust procurement channels early, while major producers like Thailand and Côte d'Ivoire prioritize certified exports to retain market share. Industry experts stress that the delay does not signal leniency; instead, it accelerates the sector's "green revolution," with traceability systems and certification expected to drive long-term cost increases.

Sumitomo Rubber Adopts Sustainable Carbon Black

Sumitomo Rubber Industries announced it has started mass-producing Dunlop passenger car tires using sustainable carbon black derived from end-of-life tires (ELTs) via chemical recycling, a first for the company. Production launched at its Miyazaki Plant in November 2025, following a January 2025 joint project with Mitsubishi Chemical. The material was previously tested successfully in GT300-class racing tires, which won two consecutive races in the 2025 AUTOBACS SUPER GT series, proving consistent performance in high-stress conditions. This move aligns with the industry's push for circular economy practices, reducing reliance on fossil fuel-based carbon black.

Regional & Market News

Sri Lanka Factory Fire: A rubber product factory in Horana's Wavulagala area caught fire on the morning of December 29; no casualties were reported, and firefighters are working to contain the blaze, with the cause still under investigation.

U.S. Rubber Seal Market: A new report projects the U.S. vulcanized rubber seal market will grow at a CAGR of 0.8% in value to reach $5.8 billion by 2035, with consumption volume hitting 423,000 tons (CAGR 0.7%), supported by steady demand from automotive and industrial sectors.

Raw Material Costs: Butadiene prices continued to rise, boosting synthetic rubber production costs; major plants in Dushanzi and Maoming remain shut, while most others operate normally, keeping supply adequate but constraining profit margins for manufacturers.

Market Outlook

Near-term rubber prices are likely to trade sideways, supported by cost factors (e.g., butadiene for synthetics, peak-season supply for natural rubber) but limited by weak downstream demand and high inventory levels. The EUDR's implementation will reshape global supply chains, favoring certified producers and recyclers. Market participants should closely monitor inventory changes, tire factory operating rates, and policy updates to navigate year-end volatility.
