China’s Plastic Products Output Continues Negative Growth As Downstream Demand Weakens

Leave a message

China's plastic products output remained in negative territory in August 2026, with monthly production at 6.125 million tons, down 7.9% year-on-year, according to official data. The cumulative output for January–August fell 3.5% year-on-year, widening from the decline seen in the first seven months. The decline is not a seasonal fluctuation: monthly output first turned negative in May, and the downward trend has persisted for four consecutive months.

The weakness is driven by multiple factors. High polyethylene prices, linked to geopolitical tensions and elevated oil prices, have suppressed downstream procurement willingness. Plastic processing enterprises face squeezed profit margins and are reluctant to accept new orders at elevated raw material costs. Export orders have also underperformed expectations, prompting export-oriented processors to reduce production schedules.

The data suggests that demand recovery in China's plastics processing sector may be slower than expected. For international buyers, this means Chinese suppliers may be more selective about order volumes and pricing, and lead times could be affected by reduced operating rates at some processing plants.
