Many people still confuse TPR with TPE; however, there are actual differences in the scope of these concepts. TPE stands for Thermoplastic Elastomer and is a general term for a broad category of materials that includes TPR. In this article, we will explain exactly what TPR is and how it differs from TPE.

I. What kind of material is TPR?

TPR stands for Thermoplastic Rubber. In some parts of Asia, elastomer blends based on styrene-based elastomers like SEBS and SBS are all referred to as TPR. However, to distinguish between them, domestic manufacturers in China label SEBS-based blends as TPE and SBS-based blends as TPR. This differs from the terminology used by some users in other parts of Asia.

TPR is a soft thermoplastic material that possesses rubber-like elasticity but does not require vulcanization and can be processed directly via molding. It offers the resilience and wear resistance of conventional rubber, along with excellent slip resistance and shock absorption, while providing superior softness and comfort compared to rubber. However, TPR materials generally fall short of vulcanized rubber in terms of tensile strength, fatigue resistance, and overall mechanical properties.

Additionally, the price of TPR materials typically ranges from 12,000 to 35,000 RMB per ton; prices may be higher for specialized grades, such as food-grade, flame-retardant, or high-temperature resistant materials. Consequently, when inquiring about prices, suppliers will usually ask what product is being manufactured and what specific physical property or environmental compliance requirements apply. Providing a sample, a technical data sheet, or details on environmental standards allows the supplier to provide an accurate, tailored quote.

II. What is the difference between TPR and TPE?

1. Base materials: TPE uses SEBS as its base material, whereas TPR uses SBS.

2. Production process: The processing temperature for TPE is slightly higher than that for TPR.

3. Weather resistance: TPE offers better weather resistance, while TPR is relatively inferior in this regard; this is why many high-end products on the market use TPE rather than TPR.

4. Appearance: TPR typically has a glossy finish, whereas TPE has a matte finish and offers a better tactile feel. 5. The scope of application for TPR is narrower than that of TPE.
Because TPR materials meet environmental safety standards and can serve as a substitute for PVC, they are a preferred choice across many industries-such as adult products, healthcare, automotive, and electronics/telecommunications-for manufacturing a wide range of items, including adult novelties, medical devices (stoppers, catheters), industrial tool handles, various other handles, casters for luggage and carts, and sports equipment (resistance bands, yoga mats, etc.).
