EPDM - the water and weather standard
The default compound for plumbing, HVAC, and outdoor fastener applications. Excellent resistance to hot water, steam, UV, and ozone, with FDA and potable-water grades available. Not suitable for petroleum fluids - it degrades in contact with oils and fuels.
Chloroprene (CR) - the balanced all-rounder
Good ozone, UV, and weathering resistance plus moderate oil resistance, with flame-retardant behavior. The standard for outdoor mechanical and electrical enclosure fasteners, and a strong choice for marine applications due to saltwater resistance.
NBR - Nitrile, the oil specialist
Excellent resistance to petroleum-based oils, fuels, and hydraulic fluids across a moderate temperature range. The right choice for automotive engine, fuel, and hydraulic systems - but weak against ozone and sunlight, so it belongs under the hood rather than outdoors.
Silicone (VMQ) - the wide-range, food-grade option
The broadest temperature span, roughly −60 °C to +200 °C (up to 230 °C in some grades), with excellent dielectric properties and food- and medical-grade options. Ideal for high-temperature electronics, food processing, and pharmaceutical seals - but lower mechanical strength and poor oil resistance limit it in dynamic or oil-wetted roles.
FKM - Fluoroelastomer, for harsh conditions
For aggressive chemicals and sustained high temperatures (roughly −20 °C to +200 °C). Specified where acids, solvents, fuels, or extreme heat would destroy other elastomers, and where the higher unit cost is justified by the consequences of failure.

Manufacturing: How Quality Is Made
Most rubber washers are produced by compression molding - cost-effective for standard, high-volume flat geometries - or injection molding when tighter tolerances, complex profiles, or custom features are required. Increasingly, large single-piece washers and gaskets are molded in one piece to eliminate the weak splice points that historically formed where smaller seals were joined - a meaningful improvement for oversized pipes and irregular industrial equipment.
Quality Tests That Matter on an RFQ
- Compression set - The single most important test for a sealing washer. Typical method: 25% compression, 70 °C × 24 h, with a target set of ≤ 15% (per GB/T 7759; ASTM D395 Method B is the international equivalent). A low set means the washer keeps sealing over time.
- Hardness (Shore A) - Commonly specified 40–90 Shore A; the right value balances sealing force with ease of installation. Tested per ASTM D2240.
- Tensile strength & elongation - A good NBR 70 washer, for example, typically shows tensile strength ≥ 10 MPa and elongation at break ≥ 300% (ASTM D412).
- Heat aging - Validates long-term stability, e.g., 70 h at the specified service temperature with no cracking or unacceptable loss of properties (ASTM D573).
- Certification & compliance - Confirm which apply to your part: NSF/ANSI 61 or WRAS for potable water, FDA 21 CFR 177.2600 for food contact, ASTM D2000 for material specification, and IATF 16949 / ISO 9001 / REACH / RoHS for automotive and regulated supply chains.
