The EV Wave: To offset heavy battery packs, engineers focus on lightweighting using lighter materials (like TPEs) or bonding techniques. New rubber compounds are also developed for battery pack fire protection and specialized sealing.
Sustainability: The industry is working to increase the use of recycled rubber content in non-critical parts and improve the end-of-life recyclability of rubber components.
Key Materials and Selection Logic
Engineers select specific rubber compounds based on the component's operating environment. Here is how the most common materials are "assigned" their roles:
Natural Rubber (NR): The top choice for vibration control. Its excellent elasticity and fatigue resistance make it ideal for core components like engine mounts and suspension bushings.
EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer): The versatile all-rounder, especially for sealing. Highly resistant to ozone and aging, it is the dominant material for window and door seals, as well as radiator hoses and brake diaphragms.
NBR (Nitrile Butadiene Rubber): The oil resistance expert. It is used for parts in direct contact with oils and fuels, such as fuel hoses, hydraulic hoses, and oil seals.
FKM (F-Fluoro, K-Kautschuk, M-Monomer type rubber - Fluorocarbon Rubber): The special forces material (this is the family of the Bi-FKM you asked about earlier). It withstands extreme heat (over 200°C / 392°F) and aggressive chemicals. It is critical for cylinder head gaskets, valve stem seals, and turbocharger hoses.
CR (Chloroprene Rubber / Neoprene): The versatile veteran with good overall weather, oil, and flame resistance. Often used in drive belts and dust boots, though being replaced by more specialized rubbers in many applications.
HNBR (Hydrogenated Nitrile Butadiene Rubber): An upgraded version of NBR. It offers significantly better heat and durability performance. It is the preferred material for long-life components like high-performance timing belts and air conditioning seals.
