PETG (Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol-Modified) is a transparent, amorphous copolyester often regarded as a versatile all-rounder that combines the printability of PLA with the mechanical performance of ABS.
It is produced by modifying PET (the material used in common water bottles) through copolymerization with glycol or CHDM, which suppresses crystallization and results in higher transparency and improved processability.

Key Characteristics and Performance Balance
PETG's most notable feature is its excellent balance of comprehensive properties, as detailed below:
High Transparency and Gloss – As an amorphous material, PETG has a light transmittance of over 90%, giving it a crystal-clear appearance similar to glass or acrylic.
Outstanding Toughness and Impact Resistance – It is more flexible and durable than PLA, resisting cracking and breaking under impact. Its elongation at break can reach as high as 250%, indicating excellent ductility.
Good Heat and Weather Resistance – Its heat deflection temperature is typically in the range of 60°C–71°C, higher than PLA (around 40°C), and it also offers reasonable resistance to humidity.
Biocompatibility and Safety – Some medical-grade PETG formulations have passed ISO 10993 and USP Class VI biocompatibility tests, making them suitable for medical devices. Certain brands also hold FDA and EU food-contact material certifications.
Printability – In 3D printing, it exhibits low shrinkage and minimal warping, with a printing difficulty level between that of PLA and ABS.
Major Applications
Thanks to its well-rounded properties, PETG is used in a wide variety of fields:
3D Printing Functional Parts – One of the most popular materials in 3D printing, ideal for functional components that require a balance of strength and toughness, such as robotic parts, brackets, and snap-fit joints.
Medical Devices and Laboratory Consumables – Due to its high transparency and biocompatibility, it is widely used in manufacturing single-use cell culture vessels, lab ware, surgical guides, and dental aligners.
Transparent Models and Packaging – Suitable for printing translucent lampshades, display cases, and storage containers, as well as food and beverage packaging and cosmetic containers.
