Material Selection and Formulation

The foundation of any food-grade seal lies in its raw material. We utilize FDA-compliant elastomers that are specifically formulated to resist degradation when exposed to food products, cleaning agents, and extreme temperatures. Our primary materials include Fluorocarbon (FKM/Viton), Silicone (VMQ), Nitrile (NBR), and Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (EPDM).

 

 

Each material serves a distinct operational purpose. For instance, FKM is selected for applications requiring high-temperature resistance and compatibility with aggressive cleaning chemicals and oils. Silicone is preferred for extreme temperature cycling and applications where flexibility at low temperatures is critical. EPDM is utilized for its excellent resistance to steam, hot water, and mild acids, making it ideal for dairy and beverage processing. NBR is often chosen for its balance of mechanical strength and resistance to fats and oils.

Crucially, we source only virgin, food-grade compounds. We do not use regrind or recycled materials in our FDA formulations. Every batch of raw material is accompanied by a Certificate of Analysis (CoA) and must pass our internal verification testing to ensure it meets FDA 21 CFR 177.2600 standards, as well as other relevant specifications such as NSF/61 or EC 1935/2004, depending on the client's geographic market. Color coding is also strictly managed, with FDA-approved pigments used to facilitate visual identification and prevent cross-contamination on the production line.

Precision Manufacturing and Curing Processes

Manufacturing O-rings to exact tolerances requires more than just a mold; it demands a controlled production environment. Our manufacturing process begins with precision mold design. We utilize CNC machining to create molds with tight tolerances, ensuring that the final part dimensions fall within acceptable limits for dynamic or static sealing applications.

The compounding and mixing phase is conducted in a dedicated, clean environment to prevent contamination from non-food-grade materials. Once mixed, the rubber is cut into precise pre-forms to minimize flash and ensure uniform material distribution during the curing cycle.

 

 

Curing (vulcanization) is the most critical phase of O-ring production. We employ vacuum compression molding, which removes trapped air and prevents internal voids or porosity that could compromise the seal's integrity or harbor bacteria. Curing time and temperature are strictly monitored and recorded for every batch. Under-curing leads to poor compression set and premature failure, while over-curing can make the material brittle. Our automated systems ensure that each cycle meets the exact rheological requirements of the specific compound being used.

Post-curing is often necessary, particularly for FKM and Silicone, to drive off volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and stabilize the physical properties of the elastomer. This secondary baking process is essential for meeting low-outgassing requirements and ensuring long-term chemical resistance.
