Custom BMC Molded Plastic Parts Heat Resistance
BMC stands for bulk molding compound, a thermoset material made of unsaturated polyester resin reinforced with short glass fibers and mineral fillers. Once cured in a mold, it cannot be remelted. This is the reason a BMC molded part holds tight dimensional tolerances and stays rigid at temperatures where ordinary thermoplastics would soften or sag.
Typical grades carry a UL94 V-0 flame rating and a continuous service temperature around 130–170 °C, depending on filler and glass loading. The cured compound is a good electrical insulator, which is why it is commonly chosen for junction boxes, insulator housings, connector bodies, and encapsulated motor components. It resists tracking, moisture, and common solvents, and it does not creep under sustained load the way unfilled thermoplastics tend to.
Parts are formed either by compression molding on a hydraulic press or by BMC injection molding. The choice depends on wall thickness, insert placement, and annual volume. Compression works well for large, shallow pieces such as wash basins, sink bodies, cover plates, reflectors and drainage channel grates. Injection suits smaller, more intricate shapes with metal inserts already loaded into the tool. Both routes produce a low-shrinkage surface that takes paint or gel coat, and the compound flows around inserts so threads and mounting bosses can be formed directly into the part.
Geometry, wall thickness, and insert layout follow the customer's drawings or samples. Glass percentage, color, and flame-retardant grade can be adjusted to meet a specific insulation or heat requirement. Sample shots are run from the production tool before full release, so buyers can check fit, flash, and surface finish against their assembly drawings. Finished pieces ship trimmed and deflashed, ready for assembly.
Common end uses across customer projects include electrical insulation boxes, lamp reflectors, appliance bases, encapsulated capacitor motors, plumbing fixtures such as sinks and wash basins, and drainage channel covers. The material is not suited for continuous contact with strong acids or for repeated flexing loads, and these limits are confirmed against the actual working fluid and temperature before a grade is recommended.
