The Extrusion Manufacturing Process

Plastic extrusion is a continuous, high-volume process used to create objects with a fixed cross-sectional profile. Our production workflow begins with the careful selection of raw polymer resins. These materials, typically in pellet form, are fed into the hopper of an extruder. Inside the heated barrel, a rotating screw conveys the plastic forward, subjecting it to controlled heat and shear force until it reaches a molten, semi-fluid state.

 

 

The molten plastic is then forced through a hardened steel die. This die is precision-machined to impart the specific shape required by the client's design. Once the material exits the die, it enters a calibration and cooling stage. This phase is critical for maintaining dimensional stability. Depending on the material and profile complexity, we utilize water bath cooling or vacuum calibration tanks to ensure the part solidifies into its final geometry without warping or distortion. Finally, pullers guide the cooled profile to a cutting mechanism, where it is sized to the required lengths.

Material Selection and Properties

The performance of an extruded component is directly dependent on the polymer selected. We process a wide range of materials, each offering distinct physical and chemical characteristics suitable for different operating environments.

Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC): We offer both rigid (uPVC) and flexible PVC formulations. Rigid PVC provides excellent structural strength and chemical resistance, making it suitable for construction profiles and industrial piping. Flexible PVC, compounded with plasticizers, is used for sealing gaskets, edge trims, and protective liners where elasticity is required.

Polyethylene (PE) and Polypropylene (PP): These polyolefins are characterized by their low density and resistance to moisture and chemicals. High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) is frequently selected for applications demanding high impact strength and abrasion resistance, such as industrial wear strips and cutting boards.

 

 

 

Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS): This engineering thermoplastic offers a balance of toughness, impact resistance, and surface hardness. ABS extrusions are commonly used in automotive components, electronic housings, and protective bumper guards.

Thermoplastic Elastomers (TPE): TPEs bridge the gap between rubbers and plastics. They provide the soft-touch feel and sealing capabilities of rubber but can be processed with the efficiency of plastic extrusion. These materials are ideal for soft seals, grips, and weather-stripping applications.

Polycarbonate (PC) and Acrylic (PMMA): For applications requiring optical clarity and high light transmission, we extrude Polycarbonate and Acrylic profiles. These materials offer high impact resistance (in the case of PC) and excellent weatherability, suitable for lighting diffusers, glazing bars, and protective shields.

Customization and Fabrication Capabilities

Beyond the primary extrusion process, we provide various secondary operations to deliver finished components ready for assembly.

Custom Die Design: Our engineering team designs and fabricates extrusion dies in-house. This allows us to accommodate complex geometries, multi-chamber profiles, and specific tolerance requirements. We work from client-provided CAD drawings or physical samples to develop tooling that ensures accurate profile replication.

Co-extrusion: This process involves the simultaneous extrusion of two or more materials to create a single, integrated profile. A typical application involves combining a rigid substrate with a flexible sealing lip. This eliminates the need for secondary assembly and ensures a permanent bond between the different material sections.

Post-Extrusion Fabrication: We offer a range of finishing services, including precision cutting, drilling, punching, and routing. Additionally, surface treatments such as hot stamping, screen printing, and the application of pressure-sensitive adhesive tapes can be performed to meet specific installation or branding needs.
