Material Selection and Properties

Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (EPDM) is the primary material used for our moulded bellows dust covers due to its balanced combination of physical and chemical properties. EPDM exhibits strong resistance to ozone, UV radiation, weathering, and aging, making it suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications. It maintains flexibility across a wide temperature range, typically from -40°C to +150°C, with short-term tolerance up to 170°C depending on the specific compound formulation.

The material also offers good resistance to water, steam, mild acids, alkalis, and polar solvents. However, it is not recommended for use with petroleum-based oils or fuels, where NBR or FKM compounds may be more appropriate. We can adjust the EPDM formulation based on the specific environmental and chemical exposure conditions of the application, including modifications for enhanced tear resistance, compression set, or electrical insulation.

Manufacturing Process

Our bellows dust covers are produced using compression and transfer moulding techniques, which allow for precise control over wall thickness, convolution geometry, and dimensional tolerances. Each part is moulded from pre-formed blanks in heated cavities, followed by deflashing and post-cure treatment when required to achieve optimal physical properties.

We maintain in-house mould design and fabrication capabilities, enabling us to develop custom tooling based on customer drawings or 3D models. This allows for rapid prototyping and iterative design adjustments before full production. Moulds are manufactured to tight tolerances to ensure consistency across production runs, and we perform regular maintenance and dimensional checks to prevent tool wear from affecting part quality.

Design Considerations

The performance of a rubber bellows dust cover depends heavily on its geometric design. Key parameters include the number and profile of convolutions, inner and outer diameters, collapsed and extended lengths, and wall thickness distribution. These factors determine the part's stroke capability, fatigue life, and resistance to buckling under axial or lateral loads.

We work with customers to optimize bellows geometry for the intended motion profile and space constraints. Finite element analysis (FEA) can be used during the design phase to simulate stress distribution and predict potential failure points, particularly in applications involving high cycle counts or extreme deflection. Features such as integrated mounting lips, sealing beads, or reinforcement rings can be incorporated directly into the mould to simplify assembly and improve sealing performance.

Quality Control and Testing

Every production batch undergoes inspection for dimensional accuracy, visual defects, and material consistency. Standard checks include durometer hardness, tensile strength, elongation at break, and compression set testing, performed in accordance with ASTM or ISO standards. For applications requiring specific certifications, we can provide material test reports and compliance documentation for RoHS, REACH, or other regulatory frameworks.

We also conduct functional testing when requested, including stroke cycle tests, environmental exposure trials, and seal integrity checks under simulated operating conditions. This data supports design validation and helps identify any necessary adjustments before mass production.

Customization and Application Support
