The Material Science: Choosing Between NBR and FKM

In our mixing room, the process starts with the raw polymer. We frequently get asked, "Which material do I need?" As the makers, here is our practical advice based on what we see in the field.

NBR (Nitrile Butadiene Rubber): This is our bread and butter. It is the industry standard for a reason. When you are dealing with petroleum-based oils, greases, and fuels at moderate temperatures (up to 100°C), NBR is the most cost-effective warrior. It offers excellent abrasion resistance and compression set properties. If your application is a standard gearbox or a motor running at normal speeds, our NBR compounds are engineered to last.

FKM (Fluoroelastomer/Viton®): When the environment gets hostile, we switch to FKM. In our production lines, FKM is reserved for high-performance applications. If your machinery deals with aggressive chemicals, acids, or operates at high temperatures (up to 200°C), NBR will fail, but FKM will hold the line. It is more expensive, yes, but it is cheaper than replacing a burnt-out pump.

Decoding the Geometry: VA, VS, and VL Types

We produce these seals to ISO 6195 standards. While they look similar to the untrained eye, the geometry of the lip and the metal reinforcement defines their function.

The VA Type (The Universal Defender)
The VA type is what we call a "heavy-duty" seal. It features a steel ring that is fully vulcanized with rubber on both the outside diameter and the sealing lip.

Why we make it this way: The full rubber coating allows for a tight interference fit in the housing, preventing the ring from rotating.

Best for: Protecting bearings against coarse dust and dirt. It acts as a primary seal or a secondary protective shield.

The VS Type (The Friction Fighter)
The VS type is lighter. It usually features a metal insert or a different cross-section designed to reduce centrifugal force at higher speeds.

Why we make it this way: At high RPMs, a heavy seal can pull away from the shaft. The VS design maintains contact pressure without generating excessive heat.

Best for: High-speed spindles and applications where heat generation is a concern.

The VL Type (The Narrow Profile)
Space is often a luxury in mechanical design. The VL type is our narrow version.

Why we make it this way: It offers the sealing capability of a V-ring but fits into tight axial spaces where a standard VA ring simply wouldn't fit.

Best for: Compact gearboxes and automotive applications with limited housing width.

The V-Ring Water Seal: Tackling the Toughest Enemy

Water is arguably harder to seal than oil. It has low viscosity and high surface tension, meaning it seeks out the tiniest imperfections.

Our V-Ring Water Seals are engineered specifically for this challenge. Unlike standard oil seals that might use a single lip, our water seals often utilize a multi-lip design or a specialized "garter spring" to maintain constant radial force on the shaft.

We manufacture these with a focus on hydrolytic stability. Standard rubber can degrade when submerged in hot water, but our specialized compounds (often EPDM or specialized FKM blends) resist swelling and cracking. Whether it is a submersible pump or a mixing vessel in a food processing plant, these rings provide a robust barrier against ingress.
