Hydraulic Cylinder Piston Seals & Oil Seals: Technical Specifications and Manufacturing Overview
In the realm of hydraulic systems, the efficiency and longevity of the machinery rely heavily on the integrity of its sealing components. As a dedicated manufacturer, we understand that a hydraulic cylinder is only as reliable as its weakest seal. Our production facility specializes in the engineering and manufacturing of high-performance Piston Seals and Oil Seals, designed to maintain pressure integrity and prevent fluid leakage under rigorous operating conditions.
This overview details the material composition, design mechanics, and operational parameters of our sealing solutions, providing technical buyers and engineers with the necessary data for system integration.

1. Material Science and Compound Selection
The foundation of a reliable seal lies in the elastomer or thermoplastic compound used. Our manufacturing process utilizes a strict selection of raw materials, chosen based on the specific chemical and thermal environments of the intended application.
Nitrile Butadiene Rubber (NBR/Buna-N): This is our standard compound for general-purpose hydraulic applications. It offers excellent resistance to petroleum-based hydraulic oils, mineral oils, and greases. Our standard NBR compounds are formulated to operate effectively within a temperature range of -30°C to +100°C.
Fluorocarbon Rubber (FKM/Viton): For high-temperature or aggressive chemical environments, we utilize FKM compounds. These seals provide superior resistance to heat, oxidation, and a wide range of chemicals, including acids and solvents. FKM is the preferred choice when temperatures exceed 100°C or when using fire-resistant hydraulic fluids (HFD).
Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE): For applications requiring extremely low friction and high wear resistance, we manufacture seals using virgin or filled PTFE. By blending PTFE with bronze, carbon, or glass fibers, we enhance its load-bearing capacity and thermal conductivity. PTFE seals are chemically inert and capable of operating in a range of -60°C to +200°C.
Polyurethane (TPU): Used primarily for heavy-duty piston and rod seals, our thermoplastic polyurethane compounds offer high tensile strength, excellent abrasion resistance, and high resistance to extrusion.

2. Piston Seals: Design and Function
The primary function of a piston seal is to act as a pressure barrier between the two chambers of a hydraulic cylinder. It must prevent fluid from bypassing the piston while accommodating the dynamic movement of the rod.
Double-Acting Piston Seals
Our standard double-acting seals are designed to seal pressure from both directions. A common configuration involves a step-seal design, consisting of a PTFE or polyurethane sealing element energized by an O-ring (usually NBR or FKM).
Mechanism: The O-ring provides the initial pre-load to ensure sealing at low pressures. As system pressure increases, it acts upon the O-ring, which in turn pushes the sealing element against the cylinder bore.
Advantages: This design minimizes the stick-slip effect (static friction), ensuring smooth operation even at low speeds. The PTFE cap also reduces wear on the cylinder tube.

Single-Acting Piston Seals
These are designed to seal pressure from one direction only. They typically feature a U-cup or cup seal profile.
Installation: They are often installed in pairs, back-to-back, to handle bi-directional pressure, or singly where pressure is applied to only one side of the piston.
Lip Design: The sealing lip is precision-molded to maintain contact with the cylinder wall. Under pressure, the lips spread outward, increasing the sealing force proportionally to the hydraulic pressure.
3. Oil Seals and Rod Seals
While often used interchangeably in casual conversation, rod seals and oil seals serve distinct roles in the factory context.
Hydraulic Rod Seals
The rod seal is the most critical sealing element in a hydraulic cylinder. It prevents hydraulic fluid from leaking out of the cylinder along the moving piston rod.

Extrusion Gap: Our rod seals are designed with specific tolerance limits for the extrusion gap. In high-pressure systems (above 20 MPa), we recommend using anti-extrusion rings (backup rings) made of PTFE or hard rubber to prevent the seal from being forced into the gap between the piston and the rod gland.
Lubrication Film: A perfect seal would cause the rod to run dry and wear out prematurely. Our rod seals are engineered to allow a microscopic film of oil (approx. 0.5 to 1 micron) to remain on the rod during the retraction stroke. This film lubricates the seal and the rod, extending the life of both components, while the seal wipes the excess oil during the extension stroke.
Rotary Oil Seals
Distinct from linear hydraulic seals, our rotary oil seals are designed for rotating shafts, such as those found in gearboxes, motors, and spindles.
Construction: These typically consist of a metal outer case for a secure press-fit into the bore, a flexible sealing lip (elastomer), and a garter spring.
The Garter Spring: This coil spring wraps around the sealing lip, providing constant radial force to compensate for lip wear and shaft runout, ensuring consistent sealing pressure over time.

As a production facility, our focus is on precision molding and consistency.
Molding Process: We utilize compression molding for larger rubber parts and injection molding for PTFE and high-volume rubber seals. This ensures that the polymer chains are oriented correctly, providing optimal physical properties.
CNC Machining: For low-volume or prototype requirements, we employ CNC machining to cut seals from extruded tubing or plates. This allows for rapid turnaround without the lead time of mold fabrication.
Tolerance Standards: Our standard production adheres to ISO 3601 and ISO 7425 standards regarding dimensional tolerances. We maintain strict control over the inner diameter, cross-section, and concentricity of the seals.
Surface Finish: We recognize that the seal is only half of the sealing system. The mating hardware (rod and bore) must meet specific surface finish requirements (typically Ra 0.2 to 0.4 µm for dynamic surfaces) to prevent abrasive wear on the seal lip.
