Material Properties and Formulation

Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (EPDM) is the standard elastomer for automotive exterior and under-hood applications due to its saturated molecular structure. This chemical stability provides inherent resistance to ozone, UV radiation, and extreme weathering, preventing the cracking and degradation commonly seen in natural rubber.

Our EPDM compounds are formulated to maintain flexibility across a wide operational temperature range, typically from -40°C to +150°C. This thermal stability is essential for components located near engine bays or exhaust systems, where rapid temperature fluctuations occur. Furthermore, EPDM exhibits excellent resistance to water, steam, and polar solvents, including automotive brake fluids and coolants. However, it is important to note that standard EPDM is not suitable for continuous contact with petroleum-based fuels or mineral oils; for such applications, we recommend alternative materials like NBR or FKM.

Manufacturing Processes and Tooling

We manufacture automotive bellows using both compression and injection moulding techniques. Injection moulding is frequently utilized for high-volume automotive production, as it allows for precise control over wall thickness and convolution geometry, ensuring consistent part weight and dimensional accuracy.

Our in-house tooling department designs and fabricates moulds based on customer CAD data or physical samples. This vertical integration allows us to optimize the mould design for efficient material flow and uniform curing. Post-moulding operations include automated deflashing, trimming, and secondary assembly processes, such as over-moulding onto plastic or metal inserts, which is a common requirement for modern vehicle integration.

Design and Engineering Parameters

The functional lifespan of a rubber bellow is heavily dependent on its geometric design. We work with engineering teams to optimize parameters such as the number of convolutions, convolution profile, and wall thickness distribution. These factors directly influence the bellow's axial stroke, lateral displacement capability, and resistance to buckling under compressive loads.

During the development phase, we can utilize Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to simulate stress distribution throughout the bellow's travel cycle. This helps identify areas of high stress concentration that could lead to premature fatigue failure, allowing for design adjustments before tooling is finalized.
